You have to watch out for me, all right? And if I ever turn into something that I’m not… You have to kill me.
This scene, this god damned scene is so intense it makes my chest feel like it’s going to cave in. Sam is so desperate and so vulnerable, and you’re pretty much watching Dean’s heart being crushed in real time. Sam trusts Dean so entirely that he doesn’t just trust him with his life, he puts the metaphorical gun in his hand, and Dean would rather die [and will die] than let anything happen to Sam. But he promises an empty promise to shut his drunk brother up, because as he says two episodes later, “if it’s the last thing I do, I’m gonna save you”. And Sam is so relieved and so grateful that his big brother will have his back on something even as dark as this that he acts on impulse, the usual Winchester bubble of manly touching thrown out the window thanks to alcohol. He reaches up and cradles Dean’s face, drags his thumbs over his cheeks, while taking in a sharp breath through his teeth. His emotions are so raw that he’s just moving without thinking, trying to find some way to express his feelings but words don’t feel adequate enough. And it’s so strong, the energy and raw emotions in the air are just too damned much for Dean’s very sober and depressed state, that he can’t take it and he makes Sam lay down and prays that Sam doesn’t remember any of this after he sobers up.
